Quick guide: which pair is for you?
- Commuting (bus, Luas, DART): Sony WH-CH720N for comfort, or Soundcore Q30 for battery and bass. Both have noise cancelling.
- Cheapest good pair, or a gift for a teen: Sony WH-CH520. No noise cancelling, but great sound for the money and about 50 hours of battery.
- Earbuds instead: Sony WF-C510, tiny, comfortable and award-winning at What Hi-Fi?.
- Longest battery: JBL Tune 670NC, up to about 70 hours with noise cancelling off.
Over-ear or on-ear?
Over-ear headphones (Sony WH-CH720N, Soundcore Q30) sit around your ears, which blocks more noise and is usually more comfortable for long sessions. On-ear headphones (Sony WH-CH520, JBL Tune 670NC) sit on your ears: they’re lighter and smaller, but let more sound in and can feel warm.
Do you need noise cancelling?
If you travel by bus, train or plane, or work in a noisy office, yes: it makes a big difference. For listening at home or walking around, a good pair without noise cancelling is cheaper and often has a longer battery.
