Meal kits deliver recipes and the exact ingredients to your door, so there’s no weekly plan to make and less food left over in the fridge. They’re not the cheapest way to eat, but with the big new-customer discounts they can work out close to a supermarket shop for a few weeks. Here’s how the meal kits that deliver in Ireland compare, and how to get the best price from them.

What a week actually costs
Gousto’s lowest price per portion only applies to the biggest box. As an example from Gousto’s own pricing page, a 4-person, 5-recipe box (20 portions) is usually €79.80 plus €4.99 delivery, or €39.90 with the 50% first-box discount and free delivery. Smaller boxes cost more per portion, so a 2-person box with 3 recipes works out dearer per meal.
To compare fairly, work out the total for your box including delivery and divide by the number of portions. Then compare that with what the same dinners would cost you from the supermarket, including the ingredients you’d usually throw out.
How to get the best price
- Start with the intro offer, but set a reminder for when it ends. Gousto’s discounts run to box 8 within 60 days; DropChef’s covers the first 3 orders.
- Pick the biggest box you’ll actually eat. Larger boxes are cheaper per portion, but unused kits are money wasted.
- Skip weeks when you’re away or busy. All the kits here let you skip or pause online.
- Don’t stack subscriptions. Try one kit at a time, so you know which one you’d keep at full price.
Is a meal kit worth it?
A meal kit makes most sense if you often buy ingredients that go off before you use them, or if you’re tired of planning dinners. It makes less sense if you already cook from a weekly list and shop at a discount supermarket, where the same dinners usually cost less. A few weeks on an intro offer is an easy way to find out.
Questions people ask
Can I cancel a meal kit subscription any time?
Yes. Gousto says you can edit, skip or cancel orders online at any time, and DropChef says there’s no lock-in and you can skip, pause or cancel any time. Check the cut-off day for each week’s box, as changes after it may not apply to the next delivery.
Do meal kits deliver outside Dublin?
DropChef says it delivers to all of Ireland, including Northern Ireland. Check your Eircode at checkout for the others.
Is the packaging recyclable?
Each company has its own approach. Check the packaging information on its website if this matters to you.
